April 10, 2018

Morris County, NJ - On April 10, 2018, Blackridge LLC filed what is believed to be the first lawsuit in the country alleging a patient suffered severe acute pancreatitis caused by the drug Viberzi® (eluxadoline).  Plaintiff alleges she experienced almost immediate symptoms after taking a single dose of Viberzi® 75 mg.  She was subsequently diagnosed with pancreatitis, acute renal failure and acute respiratory failure.  She was hospitalized for a total of 22 days and required a feeding tube for over a month.  She alleges continued injuries and future permanent consequences as a result.

Viberzi® (eluxadoline) is a prescription medicine used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D). On March 15, 2017, the FDA issued a warning that Viberzi® should not be used in patients who do not have a gallbladder due to an increased risk of developing serious pancreatitis that could result in hospitalization or death.  This increased risk may be experienced with a single dose. Subsequently, in April 2017 the prescribing Information was changed to contraindicate (prevent) Viberzi® use in patients without a gallbladder.

From May 2015 through February 2017, the FDA received 120 adverse event reports of serious pancreatitis or death.  Among those patients who reported their gallbladder status, over 80% did not have a gallbladder.  Seventy-six patients were hospitalized, of which two succumbed to illness and died.  The two deceased patients did not have a gallbladder.

Patients who take Viberzi® should watch for symptoms of pancreatitis, such as:

  • Upper abdominal pain

  • Abdominal pain that radiates to the back

  • Abdominal pain that feels worse after eating

  • Fever

  • Rapid pulse

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Abdominal tenderness
